Oliver,
	This may have nothing to do with mplayer. Its could be a well
known kdm/gdm/xdm issue with the 3dfx driver, DRI and glide libraries.
Specifically, kdm is a big culprit. If u search redhat and mandrake
bugzilla u will find plenty of these problem reports. 

Are a using a graphical login? If yes, please run Xconfigurator and when
it asks for automatic start of X, say NO to it. Now reboot and use the
console based login. Then do 'startx' to start Xwindows.

Now, run mplayer and check if these problems have vanished.
