I agree.  A bit of RTFM /would/ help.  As in:

F-relling

I said it was failing on the X end, not the mplayer end.

I have tried that (mplayer -vo xvidix). The result: "vosub_vidix:
Couldn't find working VIDIX driver".  I also have xvidix listed in in
mplayer -vo help.  The reason I asked about "vidixinfo" is because XF86
has the followings:
glinfo
xvinfo
xdpyinfo
xvidixinfo <- ???????
i.e., is there a utility that will let me check the status and
capabilities etc. of any xvidix devices I have ?
