If you want to REALLY encode AC3 you have to use ffmpeg (ffmpef.sourceforge.net), that is also the fastest and best way to encode video. Mencoder supports ffmpeg only in video encoding (libavcodec), so you have to encode sound directly with ffmpeg. Do not use the 0.4.5 version of ffmpeg! Download the last CVS instead.
